Alcatraz Escapes
Alcatraz prison, off the coast of San Francisco, holds the record of not having a single officially recognized escape in its history. However, this record is only effective post- 1933, when the island became a state prison. During its military occupation (1853-1933), the island witnessed many successful escapes. The first took place in 1878, when a couple of men stole one of the port?s boats and rowed themselves to the shore.
