Leadership

Are Good Leaders Born or Made?

Many people believe that great leaders are born and can't be trained. Apparently we have to possess some innate capacity to inspire others to assume leadership? But is that entirely right?

The Leader As Hero

We admire heroes in sports because we want to be like them. We strive to be a hero at work by scoring goals, offering better solutions to problems than the next person. But too much emphasis on being a goal scorer gets in the way of being an effective coach, someone who helps team members think smarter for themselves.

Are There Any Born Leaders?

There is a popular, simple answer to the question of whether leaders are born or made and it is that everyone can learn to be a leader. But this simplistic answer is not very helpful or realistic and we need to develop a sharper understanding of what it means to show leadership to move beyond this confusion.

Servant Leadership - Serving The Needs Of Employees

Servant leadership means serving the needs of followers or employees. It is a good idea in so far as it encourages leaders to be less self-serving. Leaders who put their own needs first set a poor example for employees. However, we can't overlook the fact that leaders must consider the needs of shareholders and customers first and that this can run counter to the needs of employees. Hence, servant leadership is not such a great idea as its fans make out.

Are You a Leader?

Everyone can show leadership, even if only on a small scale. Leadership is no longer about occupying a role, one of dominating others. It is an occasional act - one of convincing people to think or act differently, even if only by example. Showing leadership is about promoting good ideas, not something anyone can monopolize.

Why You Are a Leader Now

Anyone can show leadership by showing the way, by promoting a new direction. You don't have to be in charge of the people you are leading. Think of Martin Luther King when he moved the US Supreme Court to outlaw segregation on buses without being in charge of any part of government.
